Surveyor’s Ingenious New Use for an Ex-Fire Truck

WHEN THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX PAYS OFF

Based on their success in recent times Benchmark Survey Group decided to step things up a notch and expand the services of their land surveying business. They did this by purchasing a large truck with an interesting history to assist in carrying out CCTV inspections and the flushing of storm water drains and sewer reticulation systems in newly built developments.

Doing what Kiwi entrepreneurs do best they looked for an out of the box solution that would allow them to service the widest range of jobs in a timely and efficient manner, to the very highest level. They needed a piece of drain cleaning equipment that would save them time, perform well and allow Benchmark Survey Group to price work competitively. After doing their research they decided to purchase a retired fire truck from the Tapanui Fire Service and then commissioned Kerrick to retro-fit it with a state of the art drain cleaning system.

The final result was not only an impressive looking unit but a highly practical drain cleaning system that ticked all of their boxes and then some. Features include a powerful 100 hp, 6 cylinder MWM motor coupled to a heavy duty Hawk pump with an output of 2,200 psi at 100 l/min, a pressure and flow combination ideal for sewer flushing and drain unclogging work. The ex-fire truck was also fitted with a large hydraulic hose reel that had speed control and an in/out lever (which helps to reduce operator fatigue and speed up the time it takes to set up and pack down). The motor, pump, tank and reel were all mounted onto a modular skid, futureproofing the unit by allowing easy modifications and reconfigurations to be made with minimal cost and hassle. The entire drain cleaning system can even be picked up and moved to a different truck should the need ever arise.

The large 5,500 litre tank was supplied by the Benchmark Survey Group and allows them to work for long periods of time without access to water mains, saving time on the job by not having to continually leave sites to refill the tank.

This case study highlights how one Surveyor’s ability to think of new and innovative ways to tackle high end drain cleaning work resulted in a practical and highly customised build that will no doubt leave a lasting impression on many of the customers he works with. Kerrick’s engineering team worked with this customer throughout the project to achieve optimum drain cleaning power and ultimately happy customers.

If you’re looking at starting a custom build a drain cleaner or water blaster have a chat to the team at Kerrick they have a wealth of experience in custom fit outs and design work and can see you set up with the right equipment for the job.
