Cleaning Auckland’s Sky Tower - Water Blasting at Extreme Heights

Kerrick
TAILORED WATER BLASTING DESIGNS FOR EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

Kerrick was approached to assess the best way to clean salt and general grime from the top mast section of the Auckland Sky Tower, on a regular basis. The cleaning would be carried out by the Sky Tower’s ‘Out Team’ of Technical Riggers, who are trained to operate safely at the extreme heights of the tower mast.

Kerrick supplied a number of compact single phase electric water blasters, each built within a stainless steel box to protect the pressure cleaner components from the harsh elements. These were bolted into place on four small platforms at different stages up the mast.

The staging of the water blasters allows the Technical Riggers to hook their hose and gun to each water blasting station and proceed to wash that area of the mast.

A more powerful three phase water blaster was sited at the platform above the restaurant, to wash the lower mast and platform area.

The single phase water blasters were fitted with a 2.2Kw motor and pump that operates at 1500 psi with a flow of 12 l/min. While the three phase water blaster had a 7.5 Kw motor and pump that operates at 3000 psi with a flow of 21 l/min.

The installation has proven to be a successful one that makes mast maintenance a more manageable task for the Sky Towers 'Out Team.'
